Beguiling Queen Soraya of Iran-Who Received a Jewel Every Day From Shah: A Victim of Time Ended in Tears

The Beguiling Soraya remains one of the saddest and most beautiful figures of royal history, a victim of times and mentalities like so many other women who did not have her outstanding public status.

 

This is tragic story of Soraya Former Queen of Iran:- who received a jewel every day from Shah- but was divorced when she couldn't give birth a successor to the throne successor to the throne. The beguiling Soraya was the Shah's only true love.

 

His first of marriage of Reza Shah Pahlavi, to Princess Fawzia of Egypt, ended in divorce. Because he only had one daughter with his first wife, and his younger brother, Ali Reza, was expected to succeed him, the Shah had to remarry to ensure stability of the crown in the country

 

Love struck the new and by now divorced Shah. Beautiful, emerald eyed beguiling Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari half German half Irani and the only daughter of Khalil Esfandiary, Iranian Ambassador to West Germany, and his wife, Eva Karl.

 

Soraya had been brought up more as a German under the tutelage of her governess Frau Mantel, followed by a stint at a Swiss finishing school in Montreaux.

 

While she was studying in London at the age of 16 in 1948, she was befriended by the Shah’s younger sister Princess Shams. A relative of Soraya’s showed her picture to the Shah who became smitten with her.

 

After his very first meeting with her, the Shah asked her father for her hand in marriage. Soon they were engaged and the Shah presented Soraya with a whopping 22.37 carat diamond ring.

 

The Shah married Soraya in 1951 at the Marble Palace that his father had had built. The wedding had been delayed because the bride had been ill from typhoid. 

She wore a Christian Dior Couture gown from his New Look collection. It had 37 yards of silver lamé studded all over with tens of thousands of pearls, 6,000 diamonds, and 20,000 marabou feathers.

 

It weighed a staggering 44 pounds (20 kilograms). Because she was still weak, the bride had difficulty walking in the heavy dress. Seeing her totter, Shah ordered a lady-in-waiting to cut the petticoats and train to lighten her load. 

Additionally, the strapless dress had a fitted long sleeve waist length jacket and veil for the Nikah ceremony. Because the wedding was in February, a full-length white mink cape kept the bride warm in the non-heated palace and she secretly wore woolen socks on her feet, which were hidden by the baggy skirt.

 

In the evening, for the 2000 people reception, the jacket and veil came off and an emerald and diamond parure from the crown jewels that matched her green eyes added even more sparkle. 5 tones of orchids, tulips and carnations had been flown in from Netherlands to do up the palace and the entertainment included a Roman equestrian circus.

 

The couple received such lavish wedding gifts as a mink coat and a desk set glittering with black diamonds sent by Soviet head Joseph Stalin, a Steuben glass Bowl of Legends sent by U.S. President and Mrs. Truman, and silver Georgian candlesticks from King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

 

Though the new Queen headed Iran’s charity association. Just two years later, in 1953, the royal couple fled Tehran for Iraq and Italy after a failed revolution attempt in Iran, but they returned soon after.

 

Seven years into the marriage, the royal couple was faced with a dilemma. They had come to a crossroads due to Soraya’s inability to have children, a fact confirmed by American doctors.

 

In October 1954, when she was 22 years old, a doctor told Soraya that it might take years for her to become pregnant, leaving her and the Shah without an heir to the throne.

 

Two days later, the Shah became angry at his birthday party when he learned that his brother, Ali Reza, next in line for the throne would not be at dinner because he was running late leaving a hunting party near the Caspian Sea. The following day, the family learned that Prince Ali Reza had died when the plane bringing him back to Tehran crashed.

 

Though he was very much in love with Soraya, the Shah desperately needed a male heir. Under the Persian constitution, if Shah had no heir, then the royal line would end. He tried to convince her to let him take a second wife, but Soraya was adamant.

In an interview to the New York Times Soraya said that she did not want “the sanctity of marriage” violated and decided that “she could not accept the idea of sharing her husband’s love with another woman.” She added it was with a heavy heart and because he had no choice that the Shah reluctantly divorced her.

At that time of their separation, Soraya issued a statement to the Iranian people from her parents’ home in Germany.

Stating, “Since His Imperial Majesty Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi has deemed it necessary that a successor to the throne must be of direct descent in the male line from generation to generation to generation, I will with my deepest regret in the interest of the future of the State and of the welfare of the people in accordance with the desire of His Majesty the Emperor sacrifice my own happiness, and I will declare my consent to a separation from His Imperial Majesty.”

 

On 21st March 1958, Iranian New Year’s Day, the Shah announced his divorce to the Iranian people in a TV and radio broadcasted speech that was broadcast, adding he would not remarry in haste. His voice shook with emotion, clearly he had been crying.

Divorce meant not only leaving her country (she was exiled to Switzerland) but also the man she loved deeply. At 26 years old, she was forced to start a new life in a new country all alone.

The Shah still loved his ex-wife; he granted Soraya the title Princess of Iran and made sure she received a monthly $7000 payment from the State of Iran. They continued to meet in Europe after their divorce, even though Soraya had started a film career.

 

Soraya became a style icon and socialite famous for her collection of jewellery and her royal past. She had a brief career as an actress (known only as Soraya) and starred in the 1965 Italian movie “The Three Faces” and became the companion of its director, Franco Indovina.

 

She had always harbored a fantasy to be a film star. Despite taking acting lessons, she only managed to appear in two films. Through her new connections, she met the married Italian director Franco Indovina and they started a love affair.

 

For a short moment, it looked as if life and love were smiling again to Soraya. But Indovina died in a plane crash, and Soraya succumbed to depression. She ended her artistic career and took up residence in France. Occasionally, she attended social events in the French capital but became an increasingly rare presence as time went on.

 

Heart-broken Soraya relocated to Paris and bought an apartment on the posh and happening Avenue Montaigne, which sold at her death for $3 million. Soraya travelled, was fond of frequenting the Plaza Athene Hotel near her home. 

She also made friends with her celebrity hair stylist Alexandre Zouari who introduced her to the young, glitzy crowd. But still lonely and depressed, she was called the “Princess with the sad eyes” by those who met her. In 1991, she wrote her second autobiography, Le Palais Des Solitudes (The Palace of Loneliness).

 

Princess Soraya bequeathed her £50 million fortune, including her engagement ring, a 1958 Rolls Royce, countless furs and costly paintings that were all auctioned off to her younger brother and only sibling, Prince Bijan Esfandiary, but he too died only a week later at his home in Cologne.

 

In the 1980s, during the Islamic Revolution when Iran reduced her revenue, she sold a number of her jewels, including a Harry Winston diamond necklace.

The necklace sold at an auction at Christie's in Geneva in November 1988.died in Paris on October 25, 2001, 21 years after the Shah of Iran. Her brother, Bijan, was the legal inheritor of her estate. But when he died, the entire estate was passed on to the German state.

 

She died in 2001 at the age of 69 in Paris. Her body was found by her cleaner. Her story inspired and impressed many people. French songwriter Francoise Mallet-Jorris to write “Je veux pleurer comme Soraya” (I Want to Cry Like Soraya), a rose was baptised with her name and an Italian/German television movie about the princess’s life, Soraya (the Sad Princess), was broadcast in 2003, starring Anna Valle as Soraya and Erol Sander as the Shah.

Since they had no living relatives and he had made no will, the entire fortune went to the German state government (and not Iran) where it was used to pay for street lighting, rubbish collection and other public amenities in North Rhine Westphalia where the Prince lived at the time of his death.

 

Perhaps the Irani people were right when they claimed their Queen was more German than Irani.

Last Days of Imperial Majesty Reza Shah Pahlavi of Iran: A Fairy Tale Ends In Exile In Tears

 As the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi Aryamehr, 59, flew out with his queen, Farah, for a 'holiday' abroad; a fairy tale came to an end. His Imperial Highness, whose claim of belonging to a 2,500-year-old dynasty of emperors.

The Shah left Iran in exile on 16 January 1979, as the last Persian monarch, leaving his duties to a regency council and Shapour Bakhtiar, who was an opposition-based prime minister.

Ayatollah Khomeini was invited back to Iran by the government, and returned to Tehran to a greeting by several thousand Iranians. The royal reign collapsed shortly after, on 11 February, when guerrillas and rebel troops overwhelmed troops loyal to the Shah in armed street fighting, bringing Khomeini to official power.

 The Shah never returned to Iran. He died in exile in Egypt in 1980.Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran on 1 February after 14 years' exile. He threw out Dr Bahktiar's government on 11 February and, after a referendum, declared an Islamic Republic on 1 April. Khomeini guided his country's revolutionary social, legal, and political development until his death in 1989.

The year was 1979. His Imperial Majesty, the Shahanshah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran, was homeless and gravely ill. The once-powerful monarch who had ruled a modern prosperous country for 37 years from the majestic Peacock Throne, commanded a powerful army and controlled massive oil wealth, had been driven out of Iran by the followers of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

 

He was now desperately seeking refuge, wandering from country to country, while battling a terminal illness, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer of the immune system.

 

The Pahlavi dynasty

The Pahlavi family reigned over Iran from 1925 to 1979. Founding father Reza Shah Pahlavi was born Reza Khan and came from a humble background. 

He soon rose up the ranks from soldier to military leader to oust the last ruler of the Qajar dynasty, which consolidated power in the late 1780s. Reza Shah held court until 1941, when a British and Russian invasion forced him to abdicate. His son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, took over.

 

The younger Pahlavi wasn’t as beloved or as confident a ruler as his father. But then the tides turned, at least for a bit, in his favor. In 1953, the United States and Britain were confronted with a problem: Iranian nationalist leader Mohammad Mossadegh had been elected prime minister and was pushing to nationalize Iran’s oil industry, in which the two Western powers were heavily invested.

 

In the political upheaval, the shah fled. So the CIA and M16, loath to lose access to Iran’s markets, orchestrated a coup to oust Mossadegh and return the shah. Iran’s ruler was now back — and determined to hold on to power.

 

 “At the same time, there is a reason there was a popular revolution against the shah. The monarchy was facing a crisis of legitimacy because of the political repression of the shah’s regime.”

In February, pro-Khomeini revolutionary guerrilla and rebel soldiers had taken over the street fighting. The military stepped to the side and, on the evening of 11th February 1977, the Shah’s reign was over. The revolutionaries had won. The Iranian monarchy was formally abolished, and Iran was declared an Islamic Republic led by Khomeini, who took over the reins of power.

 

The Revolutionary government in Iran ordered the arrest (and later execution) of the Shah and the Shahbanu. The Shah and his family had already fled into exile to Egypt on 16th January 1979, as Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and First Lady Jehan Al Sadat were personal friends.

 

However, Iran started pressing for extradition. Over the next 14 months, to keep trouble at bay, one by one country around the world shut their doors on the royal family. After Egypt, the Pahlavis stayed briefly in Morocco as guests of King Hassan II.

it was estimated that the Shah had a personal fortune of $1 billion. Despite this wealth, the family had nowhere to go.

 

The Pahlavis headed to the Caribbean, where they were granted temporary refuge in the Bahamas on Paradise Island, which the Empress recalled as the “darkest days in her life.

 

” The Shah tried to buy the island for $425 million, but his offer was rejected. Next stop was South America.

Leaving Iran

Mexico issued them a short visa and they moved into a rented villa in Cuernavaca near Mexico City. The stress took a toll and the Shah’s long-term illness of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, rapidly got worse. 

They got permission to seek medical treatment in the U.S. Iranis became incensed with the U.S. government for harboring the Shah and they attacked the American Embassy in Tehran.

Khomeini returned to Iran in 1979 after 14 years of exile

The bungled attempt by the U.S. to rescue the Americans Embassy staff and citizens that were held hostage for 444 days became known as the Iran hostage crisis. Again, the Shah and his family became a liability to the host nation and were asked to leave. This time, they headed to Contadora Island, Panama.

 

Learning that, succumbing to Irani pressure, the Panamanian Government wanted to arrest the Shah and extradite him to Iran, Farah pleaded with Jehan Al Sadat to let them return to Egypt.

Return of Khomeini in Iran

With the Shah engaged in a life-and-death struggle with cancer, the US Government wanted him to leave the country. Former queen Farah Pahlavi in desperation contacted Jehan Sadat, wife of the President of Egypt for help.

In the face of dire threats from Iran and opposition from domestic extremists, President Sadat bravely extended an invitation to them to come to Egypt. He personally welcomed the bedraggled royal family at the airport and lodged them at the stately Koubbeh Palace.

After the Shah's death, the exiled Shahbanu remained in Egypt for nearly two years. She was the regent in pretence from 27 July to 31 October 1980.President Anwar Sadat gave her and her family use of Koubbeh Palace in Cairo.

A few months after President Sadat's assassination in October 1981, the Shahbanu and her family left Egypt. President Ronald Reagan informed her that she was welcome in the United States.

बतौर हेड कंडक्टर काम करने वाले निकोलाई निकोलाएविच स्टिचकिन ने छुट्टी के एक दिन लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना नाम की खास महिला को एक जरूरी बात के लिए अपने घर बुलाया।

 

लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना चालीस के आसपास की उम्र वाली प्रभावशाली और दिलेर औरत थी, जो लोगों की शादियाँ जोड़ने के सिवाय ऐसे सारे जरूरी बंदोबस्त कराती थी, जिनकी कि चर्चा सभ्य समाज में महज फुसफुसाहटों में होती है। हमेशा विचारों में खोया हुआ, गंभीर तथा हास परिहास से कोसों दूर रहने वाला स्टिचकिन, कुछ कुछ शर्माया हुआ सा, अपनी सिगार जलाते हुए कहने लगा,

 

'आपसे मिलकर मुझे खुशी हुई। सिमोन इवानोविच ने मुझे बताया कि आप कुछ ऐसे विशेष और अहम मसलों पर मेरी मदद कर सकती हैं, जिनका सीधा वास्ता मेरी जिंदगी की निजी सुख सुविधाओं से है। लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना, जैसा कि आप देख सकती हैं कि मैं पहले ही से बावन की उम्र पार कर चुका हूँ, एक ऐसी उम्र जिसमें बहुतों की औलादें भी वयस्क हो चुकी होंगी।

 

मैं एक अच्छे ओहदे पर काम करता हूँ। हालाँकि मेरे पार बहुत ज्यादा संपत्ति नहीं है, लेकिन फिर भी मैं एक प्रेमिका, पत्नी या बच्चों की परवरिश कर सकता हूँ। मैं जरूरी तौर पर यह बताना चाहूँगा कि तनख्वाह के अतिरिक्त मेरे कुछ पैसे बैंक के पास भी हैं, जिन्हें कि मैंने अपनी सीधी सादी और ईमादार जिंदगी जीते हुए बचा रखा था।

और, लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना, मेरी इस तरह की अर्जी की एक और वजह यह है कि शादीशुदा इनसान एक गैर शादीशुदा के मुकाबले समाज में ज्यादा कद्र का हकदार होता है। मैं पढ़े लिखे तबके से बावस्ता हूँ, मेरे पास पैसे हैं, लेकिन अगर आप एक दूसरे नजरिए से देखें, तो इन सब के बावजूद, मैं हूँ क्या?

 

एक ब्रह्मचारी, जिसने कोई कसम वसम ले रखी हो। यूँ, इन सभी को नजर में रखते हुए, मैं किसी योग्य महिला के साथ विवाह बंधन में बॅंधने की अपनी दिली ख्वाहिश जाहिर कर देना चाहूँगा।'

 

'यह एक अच्छी बात भी होगी।' बिचौलिए का रूप लिए लुबोव ने उसाँस भरी।

 

'मैं अब सेवानिवृत्ति ले लेने वाला हूँ, और इस शहर में किसी से मेरी जान पहचान भी नहीं है। ऐसे में, हर किसी को समान रूप से अजनबी पाते हुए, मैं जा भी कहाँ सकता हूँ।

 

और कुछ कह-पूछ भी किससे सकता हूँ? इसीलिए सिमोन इवानोविच ने मुझे किसी ऐसे के पास जाने की सलाह दी जो इस काम में माहिर हो तथा लोगों के जीवन में खुशियाँ भरना ही उसका पेशा हो। तो इस तरह से, मैं आपसे ये गुजारिश करता हूँ कि आप मेरे आने वाले कल को सॅंवारने में कृपया मेरी मदद करें। आपके पास शहर की सभी योग्य लड़कियों की तफसील है, और आप आसानी से मेरी बात बना सकती हैं...।'

 

'हाँ, ऐसा हो सकता है।'

'पानी पीजिए, कृपा करके, पानी...।'

 

अपनी सहज भंगिमा के साथ लुबोव ने गिलास को अपने होठों से सटाया और बिना पलक झपकाए उसे खाली कर दिया।

 

'जरूर हो सकता है।' उसने जवाब दिया, 'और दुल्हन के रूप में आप किस तरह की लड़की पसंद करेंगे, मि. निकोलाई निकोलाएविच?'

 

'मैं, जो भी मेरी किस्मत को मंजूर हो।'

'बिलकुल सही फरमाया, वाकई यह किस्मत का ही सौदा होता है, लेकिन फिर भी, हर आदमी के पास पसंद नापसंद की एक अपनी समझ होती है। किसी को काले बालों वाली औरत भाती है, तो किसी को भूरे...'

 

एक गहरी साँस लेते हुए स्टिचकिन ने कहा 'लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना, मैं एक गंभीर मिजाज वाला दृढ़ चरित्र आदमी हूँ। मेरे लिए खूबसूरती तथा रूप रंग जैसी बाह्य चीजें कभी भी प्राथमिकता नहीं रखतीं, क्योंकि, जैसा कि आपको पता भी है, कि चेहरा आखिरकार अदद चेहरा भर होता है, और एक खूबसूरत बीवी होने का मतलब साथ में बहुत सारी उलझनें और परेशानियाँ भी पाले रहना होता है।

 

मेरे हिसाब से, एक औरत का सौंदर्य वो नहीं है जो हमें बाहर से दिखता है, बल्कि वो कहीं उसके अंदर छुपी चीज होता है। मेरा मतलब है कि उसे दिल का ठीक होना चाहिए तथा ऐसे ही कुछ और गुण होने चाहिए उसके पास। एक और गिलास लीजिए, प्लीज, एक और गिलास...।

 

ठीक तो यह भी होगा अगर एक तंदुरुस्त पत्नी मिले, लेकिन आपसी सह-भाव के सामने यह भी कोई उतनी जरूरी चीज नहीं होगी : सबसे अहम है समझ। लेकिन वहीं दूसरी तरफ, इसके भी कुछ खास मायने नहीं, क्योंकि अगर वो ज्यादा समझ वाली निकली तो दिमाग कुछ ज्यादा ही चलाएगी, अपने बारे में ही सोचती रहेगी और उसके जेहन में उलूल-जुलूल खयाल आते ही रहेंगे।

 

यह कोई कहने की बात तो नहीं है, लेकिन आजकल के इस दौर में अच्छी शिक्षा के बिना भी बात नहीं बनेगी, लेकिन इस मामले में भी केवल 'पढ़ाई - पढ़ाई' जैसी बात का डर है। यह तो अति उत्तम होगा कि आपकी पत्नी एक साथ फ्रेंच, जर्मन तथा ऐसी और भी भाषाओं में बड़बड़ कर सकने वाली हो, लेकिन इन सब का क्या फायदा अगर उसे बटन टाँकने का शऊर न आए?

 

मैं एक पढ़े लिखे तबके से बावस्ता हूँ, मैं कह सकता हूँ कि प्रिंस केनितलिन तक से मेरी वैसी ही बातचीत रही है, जैसी अभी आपसे है, लेकिन मैं अपने तरीके का साधारण इनसान हूँ। मुझे एक सीधी सादी लड़की चाहिए। जरूरी सिर्फ ये है कि वो मुझे एक तरजीह दे, और अपनी खुशियों के लिए मेरी कृतज्ञ हो।

 

'जाहिर सी बात है।'

'ठीक है फिर, तो अब सबसे जरूरी मसले पर आते हैं... मुझे दुल्हन के रूप में कोई अमीर लड़की नहीं चाहिए। मैं ऐसी किसी भी चीज के सामने नहीं झुक सकूँगा जो मुझे अहसास करा दे कि मैं पैसे की वजह से शादी कर रहा हूँ। मैं अपनी बीवी की कमाई रोटी नहीं खाना चाहता, मैं चाहता हूँ कि वो मेरा जुटाया खाए, और इसे समझे भी।

 

 लेकिन हाँ, मुझे किसी गरीब लड़की से भी ऐतराज है। हालाँकि मैं एक उसूलों वाला आदमी हूँ, और मैं पैसे के लिए नहीं, बल्कि प्यार के लिए शादी करना चाहता हूँ, लेकिन इसके लिए एक गरीब लड़की भी नहीं चलेगी, क्योंकि, आपको तो पता ही है कि कीमतें किस तरह आसमान छूने लगी हैं, और फिर आगे बच्चे भी होंगे।'

स्टिचकिन ने इस पर विचार किया, बोला :'जी नहीं, शुक्रिया। अब, यह देखने के लिए कि एक असामी के साथ आपकी डील किस तरह से पूरी होती है, क्या मैं पूछ सकता हूँ : आप अपनी इस कृपा के लिए क्या लेंगी?'

 

'मैं ज्यादा की अपेक्षा नहीं करती। मुझे बस एक पच्चीस रूबल का नोट, और काम हो जाने पर एक ड्रेस दे दीजिएगा, मैं शुक्रगुजार होऊँगी आपकी... और अगर दहेज वाली बात हुई, तो मामला थोड़ा अलग होगा और आप मुझे अलग से कुछ देंगे।'

 

स्टिचकिन ने दोनों हाथ मोड़े, और उन्हें सीने से सटाते हुए शर्त पर गौर करने लगा। फिर एक साँस भरते हुए बोला :'इतनी फीस तो बहुत ज्यादा होगी।'

 

अरे, यह किसी भी लिहाज से ज्यादा नहीं है। पहले के जमाने में, जब इस तरह से बहुत सारी शादियाँ होती थीं, तब हम कम रकम लेते थे। लेकिन अब का जैसा चलन है, उसमें हमें मेहनताने के नाम पर मिलता ही क्या है? अगर मुझे महीने भर में, बिना उधारी के वायदे के पच्चीस रूबल के दो नोट मिल जाएँ तो मैं खुद को खुशकिस्मत समझूँगी। और आपको तो पता ही है। आम शादियों में तो हमें कुछ मिलता भी नहीं है।'

 

स्टिचकिन ने औरत की तरफ देखा और कंधे उचका दिया।'आपका मतलब है कि एक महीने में पच्चीस रूबल की दो नोटें पा लेना छोटी कमाई है?'

'बहुत ही छोटी। पहले के जमाने में तो हम कभी कभार सौ रूबल से भी ऊपर बना लेते थे।'

 

'मुझे तो एहसास ही नहीं था कि आपके तरह के कारोबार में रहकर एक औरत इतना अच्छा कमा सकती है। पचास रूबल! हर किसी की कमाई इतनी नहीं होती। थोड़ा सा और पानी लीजिए, थोड़ा...'

 

लुबोव ने गिलास को पलक झपकने से पहले खाली कर दिया। स्टिचकिन ने उसे सिर से पाँव तक देखता रहा। फिर बोला :

 

'पचास रूबल... एक साल के मतलब छह सौ रूबल... गिलास भर लीजिए... क्यों, आपकी तरह की आय से तो... लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना, आप तो आसानी से अपने लिए किसी को चुन सकती थीं।'

 

'मेरे लिए?', लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना हँसने लगी, 'मैं तो बूढ़ी हो चुकी हूँ।''बिलकुल नहीं,... आप अभी भी काफी खूबसूरत हैं, चेहरा भी भरा पूरा है, और दूसरी सारी खूबियाँ भी हैं आपमें...?'

 

लुबोव आत्मगौरव से फूलती हुई शर्माने लगी। स्टिचकिन भी शर्म सा महसूस करते हुए उसकी बगल में बैठ गया।

 

'सच में, मैं बताऊँ, तुम बहुत ही आकर्षक हो। अगर तुम किसी ऐसे शख्स से शादी रचाओ, जो धीर-गंभीर होने के साथ सोच समझकर खर्च करने वाला हो, तो उसकी तनख्वाह और तुम्हारी आय के मिले जुले सहयोग से तुम एक बहुत ही सुखी जिंदगी जी सकोगी...।'

 

'ओह निकोलाई निकोलाएविच, तुम कैसे तो बहे जा रहे हो...'

'क्यों, मैं तो बस कह ही रहा था...'

 

एक खामोशी पसर गई, स्टिचकिन ने तेज आवाज के साथ अपनी नाक साफ की, और लुबोव अपने लाल होते चेहरे के साथ उसे नखरीले तरह से देखने लगी। उसने पूछा :'महीने का तुम्हें कितना मिलता है, निकोलाई निकोलाएविच?'

 

'किसे, मुझे? पचहत्तर रूबल, बोनस को न जोड़ूँ तो... इतने से इतर, थोड़ा बहुत हम चर्बी की मोमबत्ती और 'खरगोशों' के जरिए भी कमा लेते हैं।'

'तुम्हारा मतलब, शिकार करके?'

'अरे नहीं, 'खरगोश...' हम बिना टिकट यात्रा करने वाले यात्रियों को कहते हैं।

 

एक और वक्फा खामोशी के साथ बीत गया। स्टिचकिन ने अपना पैर ऊपर उठा लिया और, जैसा कि जाहिर था, घबड़ाहट में फर्श पर चलाने लगा।

 

'मैं पत्नी के रूप में कोई नौजवान लड़की नहीं चाहता,' उसने कहा, 'मैं अधेड़ उम्र का आदमी हूँ, और मुझे किसी ऐसे की तलाश है, जो काफी हद तक... तुम्हारी तरह की हो... गंभीर और आत्मसम्मान वाली... और शरीर से भरी पूरी, तुम्हारे जैसी...'

'इसमें इतना सोचने वाली कौन सी बात है? तुम एक ऐसी औरत हो जो मेरे दिल को भा सके, तुम्हारे अंदर वो सारे गुण हैं जो मेरे लिए सटीक हों। मैं एक ईमानदार और संयमी आदमी हूँ, और यदि तुम्हें भी पसंद हूँ, तो इससे बेहतर और क्या हो सकता है? मुझे तुम्हें अपना हाथ सौंपने की अनुमति दो!'

 

लुबोव ग्रिगोर्येव्ना ने खुशी का एक आँसू ढुलकाया, हल्के से हँसी, और प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर लेते हुए स्टिचकिन के साथ चश्मे के काँच को छू लिया।

 

'तो अब,' होने वाले, प्रसन्न, पति ने कहा, 'मुझे बताने दो कि मैं तुम्हारे साथ किस तरह के जीवन की अपेक्षा करता हूँ, ...मैं एक दृढ़ इनसान हूँ, संयमी और ईमानदार। मेरे पास चीजों की एक परिपक्व समझ है, मैं अपनी होने वाली पत्नी से भी वैसी ही दृढ़ता की उम्मीद करता हूँ, और इसकी भी, कि वो समझे कि मैं उसे संरक्षण प्रदान करने वाला तथा उसके लिए दुनिया का पहला शख्स हूँ।'

 

स्टिचकिन एक गहरी साँस लेते हुए बैठ गया, और अपनी शादीशुदा जिंदगी तथा एक पत्नी के दायित्वों के बारे में बोलता गया।
