Basant Panchami: The Indian Valentine’s Day. Five Arrows of Love-Kamdev: The Indian Cupid Burnt To Ashes by Shiva

Long before Valentine’s Day happened to India there was already a day which stands for love and devotion: Vasant Panchmi (or Basant Panchmi

It is also the day of Kamadeva. It was on this day that Kamadeva played cupid to bring Lord Shiva and Parvati together.

On Vasant Panchami, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped. But there’s another interesting story associated with this day. Since love is in the air, a not so well known legend of Shiva, Parvati and Kamdev begs retelling.

Now let us briefly look at the popular legend associated with Vasant Panchami.

After the demise of his wife Sati, Shiva renounced the world and went to live on his own in the Himalayas.

Taking advantage of the situation, the Demon Tarakasura sought Brahma’s boon, with the clause that only a son of Shiva could overpower him.

Tarakasur began creating havoc everywhere with his new found invincibility. Shiva wasn’t interested in marriage at all! So no chance of a son being born to him.

Now the gods went to Brahma, who had created the mess! Well, he had a solution. He instructed all the Gods to worship Adi Parashakti, the supreme deity, who promised to reincarnate as Himalaya’s daughter Parvati and marry Shiva.

However, things weren’t working out as planned. The charm and beauty of Parvati failed to entice Shiva and bring him out of his deep meditation.

That’s when the Gods (led by Indra) summoned Kamdev, aka Lord Manmatha, who is the Indian Cupid.

Legends have it that Kamdev was son of  Vishnu and Laxmi. He married Rati, the goddess of lust and infatuation. As per some other stories Kamdev was the son of Brahma.

Kamdev is portrayed as a handsome young man with golden wings holding a bow and arrows, riding a parrot.

Everyone was scared of Shiva’s wrath, but for the sake of saving the three worlds, Kamdev accepted this dangerous mission and set off! With a little help from the Lord of Vasant (spring), a favourable atmosphere was created with singing birds and blooming blossoms everywhere, and Kamdev aimed his special sugar coated bow, with the bowstring soaked in honey, strung by a line of bees, at Shiva who was meditating silently.

Do you know that Kamdev has 5 arrows to make you fall in love?! Each arrow causes the ‘target’ to swoon under a certain effect of love, and is tipped with a special fragrant flower.

The five flowers are white lotus, Ashoka tree flowers, Mango tree flowers, Jasmine and blue lotus. The names of these flowers in Sanskrit in order are Aravinda, Ashoka, Choota, Navamallika, and Neelotpala.

Kamdeva’s five arrows are associated with five effects that desire has on one afflicted by it.

Wondering what the 5 arrows of Kamdev do to you? The first arrow is aimed at the heart, it causes initial excitement and a youthful cheerfulness.

The second arrow is aimed at the lips, it causes one to cry out in this excitement. The third arrow is aimed at the head/brain, it makes one lose their mind / go crazy with love. The fourth arrow is aimed at the eyes, it makes you see things (even hallucinate). The fifth arrow is basically designed to hit you anywhere causing the ‘target’ to simply be absorbed with love.

Well, The story doesn’t end there. Shiva was overwhelmed for a few moments before regaining his senses. He’d lost his composure momentarily.

Although Kamdev had managed to ignite passion in Shiva’s heart for Parvati, it did not take long for the God of Destruction to get back to his senses.

Once Shiva recovered from the effects of the spell, he was infuriated and started looking for the perpetrator of the heinous act. Soon Shiva found Kamdev, who was trembling in fright, holding his sugarcane bow.

Shiva immediately realised who was responsible for the deed!

He opened his third eye instantly, and burnt the hapless Kamdev to ashes.

It was too late for the rest of the Gods, who rushed to Kamdev’s rescue. Kamdev’s consort Rati was understandably aghast at the situation, and inconsolable.

Struck with maddening grief she approached Parvati to convince Shiva to bring her husband back to life. Coaxed by His new love, Parvati, Shiva’s heart melted and he granted Kamdev’s life.

However, since his body had been incinerated, Kamdev would live without a physical form as the invisible power of love and desire prevailing in creation.

Thus, Kamdev came to be known as Ananga, the one who exists without a body. Rati had got her husband back but only as a disembodied image and not in body. It can be said that this was Shiva’s way of ensuring that Kamdev symbolised true love and longing, and not just physical lust.

And if you’re still wonderingyes, the arrows worked: Shiva did marry Parvati and together they had a son, Kartikeya, who became the general of the gods and destroyed the demon Tarakasura.

Vasant Panchami also marks the beginning of the ‘spring’ a season which brings newness, freshness, colour, warmth and sunshine after the chills and glooms of the winter.

It is the season in which flowers bloom, trees bear new leaves, birds sing and bees buzz. Every human being feels a new energy and warmth in his heart. This is also a reason that Vasant Panchami is celebrated as a day to remember your loved ones (spouse) and express love and emotions.

Mystic Spiritual Guru Rajneesh Osho: promised utopia Superb Rise & Shocking Fall ‘Sex Guru’-Drugs 93 Rolls-Royces.

Osho was a mystic. An Indian rebel saint who spoke nothing but truth which everybody knows but never dare to speak. He was a professor of phycology. And later the wanderer of spreading something beyond knowledge.

He was such a rebellious saint that you have to accept his immence guts and fearless nature. He had reasons to back each and every rebellious act of his.

Remember a dialogue from film Don:--Don ka intezar to gyarah mulkon ki police kar rahi hain,  Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, naamumkin hain.---(Don is wanted by the police forces of eleven nations, catching Don is not just difficult, it's impossible).

This was a reel dialoge–The real life story narrates that Rajneesh, Osho was denied entry by 21 countries. He with his devotees was running in his personal airoplane from one country to other.

Osho is generally considered one of the most controversial spiritual leaders to have emerged from India in the twentieth century.

His message of sexual, emotional, spiritual, and institutional liberation, as well as the pleasure he took in causing offence, ensured that his life was surrounded by controversy.

Osho became known as the "sex guru" in India, and as the "Rolls-Royce guru" in the United States.

From having 93 rolls Roy's cars, to allowing free sex in his ashram, to having a huge ashram in oragon and poona to touching each and every religion and mystics.

His only message to humanity was to break the shackles of past, mental slavery from conditionings, break the awe of religions and gods and so called saints. All he wanted was people to be crazy enough to dance and sing and sit in silence and do meditation.

He attacked traditional concepts of nationalism, openly expressed contempt for politicians, and poked fun at the leading figures of various religions, who in turn found his arrogance unbearable.

Rajneesh, the “OSHO” (1931-1990). Died at age of 58.

Osho was born Chandra Mohan Jain, the eldest of eleven children of a cloth merchant, at his maternal grandparents' house in Kuchwada; a small village in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh state in India.

He grew up to be a rebellious teenager and questioned the existing religious, cultural, and social norms in the society.

He developed an interest in public speaking and used to regularly speak at the annual Sarva Dharma Sammelan (meeting of all faiths) at Jabalpur.

He claimed to attain spiritual enlightenment at the age of 21 following a mystical experience. He began his stint as a spiritual guru simultaneously while embarking on a professional career as a professor of philosophy.

From 1958, he taught philosophy as a lecturer in Jabalpur University. He was promoted to professor in 1960.

After a controversial speaking tour in 1966, he resigned from his teaching post at the request of the university.

He characterised priests as being motivated by self-interest, provoking the Shankaracharya of Puri.

He began initiating disciples (known as neo-sannyasins) and took on the role of a spiritual teacher. In his discourses, he reinterpreted writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world.

Moving to Pune in 1974, he established an ashram that attracted increasing numbers of Westerners.

The ashram offered therapies to its Western audience and made news in India and abroad, chiefly because of its permissive climate and Osho's provocative lectures.

By the end of the 1970s, there were mounting tensions with the Indian government and the surrounding society.

Osho in United States

In 1981, the increased tensions around the Poona ashram, along with criticism of its activities and threatened punitive action by the Indian authorities, provided an impetus for the ashram to relocate to the United States.

He travelled to the United States on a tourist visa, ostensibly for medical purposes, and spent several months at a Rajneeshee retreat centre located at Kipe’s Castle in Montclair, New Jersey.

A New City Rajneesh Puram was born in Oregon desert land.

The group remained in New Jersey for a few months and then moved to Oregon where Sheela had purchased a defunct ranch known locally as “the Big Muddy.”  The ranch consisted of 64,000 acres (260 km2) of Oregon desert land and very few buildings.

It was renamed "Rancho Rajneesh" (Rajneesh puram) and Osho moved there.

Over the course of the next three years, Rajneesh sannyasins would transform this unpromising parcel into a city that supported at its height 7,000 regular residents with 15,000 annual visitors.

Maa Anand Sheela

The city, incorporated briefly as Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, had its own post office, school, fire and police departments, downtown malls and restaurants.  Its state-of-the-art reservoir even won an award for its innovative ecological design.

Within a year, the leadership of the commune became embroiled in a conflict with local residents, primarily over land use, which was marked by hostility on both sides. The large collection of Rolls-Royace cars purchased for his use by his followers also attracted notoriety.

Deportation of Osho from United States

He was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with immigration violations. Osho was deported from the United States in accordance with a plea bargain. Twenty-one countries denied him entry, causing Osho to travel the world before returning to Poona, where he died in 1990.

Following his exit from the U.S., Osho returned to India, landing in Delhi in 1985. He was given a hero's welcome by his Indian disciples.

He denounced the United States, saying the world must "put the monster America in its place" and that "Either America must be hushed up or America will be the end of the world."

Twenty-one countries denied him entry, causing Osho to travel the world before returning to Poona, where he died in 1990.

•     He then stayed for six weeks in Himachal Pradesh.

•     When non-Indians in his party had their visas revoked, he moved on to Kathmandu, Nepal, and then, a few weeks later, to Crete.

•     Arrested after a few days by the KYP, he flew to Geneva, then to Stockholm and to Heathrow, but was in each case refused entry.

•     Next Canada refused landing permission, so his plane returned to Shannon airport, Ireland, to refuel.

•     He had been granted a Uruguayan identity card, one-year provisional residency and a possibility of permanent residency, so the party set out, stopping at  Madrid, where the plane was surrounded by the  Guardia Civil.

•     He was allowed to spend one night at Dakar, and then continued Uruguay. Where Osho began speaking publicly until 19 June, after which he was "invited to leave" for no official reason.

•     A two-week visa was arranged for Jamaica but on arrival in Kingston police gave the group 12 hours to leave.

•     Refuelling in Gander and in Madrid, Osho returned to Bombay, India, on 30 July 1986.

Following his exit from the U.S., Osho returned to India, landing in Delhi in 1985. He was given a hero's welcome by his Indian disciples.

He denounced the United States, saying the world must "put the monster America in its place" and that "Either America must be hushed up or America will be the end of the world."

In 1987, he said he no longer wished to be referred to as "Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh", and in February 1989 took the name "Osho Rajneesh", shortened to "Osho" in September.

He also requested that all trademarks previously branded with “RAJNEESH” be rebranded internationally to “OSHO”.

His health continued to weaken. He delivered his last public discourse in April 1989, from then on simply sitting in silence with his followers.

Osho died on 19 January 1990, aged 58, reportedly of heart attack. His ashes were placed in his newly built bedroom in Lao Tzu House at the Poona ashram.

The epitaph reads, "OSHO. Never Born, Never Died. Only Visited this Planet Earth between 11 Dec 1931 – 19 Jan 1990."

He was really a quotable man as he taught people a lot about love and spirituality through his sayings and books. Rajneesh Osho inspired a lot of people to follow the path of spirituality with his words.

Sharing some of those words in this article and they are either the ones he has said or written in his books. Either way, the goal is to grow our wisdom with the words of a man who influenced a lot of people.
